Dorothy Jean Brown

Surrounded by her loving family and outstanding caregivers at Cherry Hill Assisted Living, Mom left this world when Dad reached down from Heaven to take her on their eternal fishing trip. We are certain that Dad had the boat hooked up to the motorhome, and a great spot picked out somewhere on one of the many lakes that they loved to fish.

Dorothy Jean (Armour) Brown was born on January 21, 1933 in Denver, Colorado. When she was six months old, she was adopted by Scott and Edna Armour. Las Animas, Colorado became her new home. Mom was joined by a brother, Don, and the Armour family was complete.

Moms parents were teachers, and their profession eventually led them to the panhandle of Idaho, where Mom would meet the love of her life, Bill Brown, at Sandpoint High School. After graduation, Mom worked at the bank in Sandpoint while Dad served in Germany during the Korean War. It was a joke among the Brown brothers that Mom chased dad over two continents, although we dont think Dad worked very hard to get away. They were married in Sandpoint, Idaho, on December 31, 1954.

Prior to their wedding, Dad was hired to work for Oliver and Oliver Logging, and Thompson Falls, Montana became their new and lifelong home; a special place that would remain close to their hearts for the rest of their lives. On December 27, 1955, Mom and Dad welcomed a baby boy to the family. Three years later, Mom, Dad, and Scott would welcome Scotts baby brother, Bob. While Dad worked long days in the woods, sometimes living away from home, Mom worked at home, making sure Scott, Bob, and the neighborhood kids survived their many pine cone fights, zip lines made from logging cable, bike wrecks, and sledding on the hill.

Their tight knit group never failed to lend a helping hand, even if it meant cutting short a vacation and traveling home from halfway across the country. The thing that we will remember most, is their love for camping and fishing with friends and family. It was a common sight to find a half a dozen motorhomes and boats in a camping area at Lake Mary Ronan, Lake Kookanusa, or Lake Pend Oreille. When the crew was not out fishing, camp was full of laughter, cards, and friendly kidding about who caught the most or biggest fish of the day. Mom was a die-hard fisherman, and if the fish were biting, the Brown boat would not be going to shore. Kokanee salmon were her favorite, and canned or smoked salmon could always be found in the pantry or freezer.

Huffman and Armour family reunions were always a huge part of Moms childhood and adult life. She loved getting together with the cousins from all over the country to play cards, cook delicious food, and visit. Family was very important to Mom, and she made it a point to stay in touch with as many aunts, uncles, and cousins, as possible. Cousin lunch in Thompson Falls was always a much anticipated event, as they loved to celebrate birthdays and their love for each other.

Mom and Dad were active in their community as members of the Jaycees, and Mom volunteered as a Cub Scout Den mother. Mom loved to play cards, and was a member of the Pinochle Marathon. She and her partner, Sandra Cullen, played for many years, until dementia stole Moms ability to enjoy that passion. She sold Home Interiors and Gifts for many years, making new friends all over Sanders County. If there is a votive or sconce on your parents wall, you can thank Mom.

Dorothy passed away on Friday, November 18, 2016; succumbing to congestive heart failure. Mom was preceded in death by her beloved husband Bill, her parents Scott and Edna Armour, brother Don(Becky) Armour, along with many of her Brown brothers and sisters-in-law. She is survived by sons Scott (Lisa), Bob (Connie), grandsons Chris (Cassie), Aaron, Kyle, R.T, 2 great-grandchildren, Darrell (Elena) Brown of Sandpoint, Idaho, Yvonne Brown of Post Falls, Idaho, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
