Elizabeth Barrie Obituary Elizabeth Jean Barrie, commonly called Betty by family and friends was born to Alex and Caroline Smith on January 10th, 1925 in the Cowitchienear Yakima, WA. The family moved to a very small town called Bellevue near Seattle where her father become caretaker of a 40-acre fruit farm. All kinds of fruits, grapes, berries, filbert nuts, and peonies were raised and shipped into Seattle to be sold in the commission houses in Seattle near where the Pike Street Market is now located. It was a busy life for the whole family but fun also as her father would let them ride the workhorses when they weren't being used. Sunday, Dec 7th came along while she was a sophomore in high school. The next morning most of the boys in the Senior class and some of the Juniors had signed up for the services and were not seen again till the war was over. The graduating class from Bellevue High in 1943 was only 33, almost all girls. During the war, help was very difficult to get so she helped her father on the farm after school and Saturdays driving tractors and trucks in the pea fields. Worked for Puget Sound Power and Light Co., in a two-girl office in Bellevue for four years at which time she met and married Robert Barrie in 1947 and moved to Kirkland and continued to work for another two years at which time they started their family. Life was never dull as we hiked up to high mountain lakes on weekends to fish. Also did salmon fishing in Puget Sound. They had four children, Mrs. Marjorie Buessing of Conrad, NH; Mrs. Susan Curry of Bellgrade MT; Mrs. Judith Gollofon of Missoula, MT; and Benjamin Barrie of Federal Way WA; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Betty continued her education through adult education taking sewing, tailoring, cake decorating, accounting, and furniture refinishing. She taught cake decorating and did wedding cakes. She was also active in children's activities and PTA. Betty loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and believed it was a privilege and obligation to take care of them and help out when needed. Very proud of all of them. She enjoyed horses, swimming, camping, hiking, fishing, and painting. She loved Jesus and tried to serve him, read through the Bible at least once a year since she was born again, and felt that there is no other book that can guide you in the way you should go.
