Jim Frank Gurden, 92, passed away at the Montana Veteran’s Home in Columbia Falls, Montana on June 17, 2026.
Jim was born to James Eldon Gurden and Bonnie Kate Stone on September 3, 1933, in Shreveport, Louisiana. His family later moved to Campo, Colorado where he attended Campo High School. Jim left High School early and joined the United States Air Force in 1951. He proudly served twenty years. During his tenure he had one tour in Vietnam from 1966-1967. He retired from the Air Force in 1971 as a Technical Sergeant. Jim was dedicated to his country and showed patriotism throughout his life.
After retirement, with the Air Force, Jim was employed with the Livingston Telephone Company (Evan’s Telecommunications) where he later retired. Jim later attended Merced Junior College.
While stationed in England, Jim married the love of his life, Elizabeth Mary Cockings in August of 1954. They raised 7 children. Jim was devoted to his family and his love for them was abundant and true. He loved his wife and children fiercely and supported them in their interests.
Jim was a simple man that lived his life with honor. He was a man of his word and had a strong work ethic. He never asked for or wanted any handouts. He was always willing to provide for and protect his family.
Jim taught his children to love the outdoors and how to live with it and to respect it. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, and everything about being outdoors. Much of his time was spent enjoying nature with his family and friends.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents, James and Bonnie; His wife Elizabeth; and daughter Susan Avila.
Jim is survived by his brother Mel Williamson; his children; Elizabeth Tacheira, Carol Lariosa, Deborah Straub, Denise Brown, Jim Gurden, and Dereck Gurden; 21 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and 8 great-great-grandchildren.
A Graveside Service will be held on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, at 11:00 am at the Thompson Falls City Cemetery in Thompson Falls, Montana. A reception will follow at Ainsworth Park in Thompson Falls, MT.
