Kathleen
Brown
May 19, 1926 — Sep 24, 2026
Kathleen "Katie" M. Brown, mother, grandmother, community leader, teacher, rancher, and friend, passed peacefully at her home at the age of 100.
Born in Los Angeles in May of 1926, Katie was raised in Mullan, Idaho, before moving to White Pine, Montana at the age of 10. She married George A. Brown, with whom she shared 62 years of marriage before his passing in 2008. Together, they raised their six children in Trout Creek, where Katie would make her home and build a life deeply rooted in family, hard work, and community.
Katie was a woman of remarkable determination, strength, resilience, and endurance. She was tough in the best sense of the word, with a boundless energy that seemed to carry her through a century of change, hard work, adventure, and service.
Community involvement was woven into nearly every part of Katie's life. She spent 50 years as a 4-H leader, teaching and mentoring generations of young people along the way. She was also a devoted member of Eastern Star for 60 years, holding every office and serving several times as Worthy Matron. She served for many years as an election judge for Sanders County and could always be counted on to participate in the Trout Creek Huckleberry Festival, the annual Trout Creek Carnival, Grange and the Sanders County Fair. She believed in showing up for her community-and she did so year after year.
Katie earned her teaching certificate from the Normal College in Dillon and taught both full time and as a substitute teacher. In later years, she helped run the family business while continuing to tend to the many responsibilities and interests that filled her days.
Life on the land was one of Katie's greatest loves. She spent countless hours in her garden tending to her beautiful flowers. She and George raised hundreds of sheep and cattle on their Trout Creek property. Katie was no stranger to long nights in the barn, often lambing well into the early morning hours to make sure each new lamb had a healthy start. She was especially proud of the sets of twins her ewes produced each season. Raising livestock demanded patience, toughness, and endurance-all qualities Katie had in abundance.
She also loved sewing, and as a night owl, it was not unusual for her to start a dress in the evening and work through the night to finish it by morning. She enjoyed keeping records and documenting the life around her. Katie was a true family historian, often spending hours researching her family records and genealogy. She had a remarkable appreciation for where people came from and took great care to preserve the stories and details that might otherwise have been lost.
Family was at the center of Katie's life. She loved hosting dinners for friends and family and took great pride in being there for people in need. She attended her children's sporting events whenever she could, with a particular fondness for the basketball games during their years at Noxon High School. She was a steady presence in the stands and in the lives of her children and grandchildren.
Katie also had an adventurous side. She was fortunate to travel throughout the country and the world with her youngest son, Webb, and his wife, Kathy. She was always game for an adventure, never afraid to pack her bags and head somewhere new, be it Ireland or Alaska. At 100 years old, her life had spanned an extraordinary amount of change, but she retained a curiosity and willingness to experience life that never seemed to fade.
Katie is survived by her children, Clinton J. Brown (wife Jeannie), John M. Brown (wife Donna), Zane N. Brown (wife Pam), Webb S. Brown (wife Kathy), son-in-law Richard Nygaard, and daughter-in-law Kathy Brown; 17 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, George A. Brown; her siblings, Nellie, Johnnie, Montana "Monte", and Barney; and her daughter, Twila G. Nygaard and son George C. Brown.
A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, October 1, 2026, at Whitepine Cemetery, followed by a reception at the Trout Creek Senior Center.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to the Montana 4-H Foundation, an organization that meant so much to Katie throughout her life.
Katie lived an incredible 100 years. She worked hard, raised a family, served her community, cared for her animals, and made sure there was always room at her table. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and the many people whose lives she touched over the course of a remarkable century.
